Instructions for reviewers

Papers in physics publishes original research in all areas of Physics and its interface with other subjects. Articles published in Papers in Physics contain new results and ideas that advance the state of Physics in a non-trivial way. All articles are reviewed by specialists prior to publication.

Papers in Physics greatly appreciates the help given by reviewers. Their critical appraisal and constructive comments help authors to improve their manuscript and research. Papers in Physics requests reviewers to give their opinion on contributions submitted by authors. The final decision on the acceptance of manuscripts for publication rests on the Board Editor in charge of the manuscript. Technical comments and subjective appreciations on the advance and perspectives opened by the author's contributions are expected from the reviewer.

Reviewers must comply with the journal ethical guidelines.

There are two different types of revision: traditional and open review.

Traditional Review

If you have been asked from one of our editors to do a traditional review, your identity will remain anonymous. Please follow the instruction below to prepare and submit your report.

  1. Log in into the Papers in Physics web site. Select to work as "Reviewer" from the list of your assigned roles (e.g. Author, Reviewer, etc.).
  2. In the “Active Submissions” section, select the article title (note the due date of the review)
  3. From the “Review” page, you can see some brief information about the submission and the review schedule (including the due date of the
    review)
  4. To accept the request, click the “Will do the review” icon and send the email message that is generated. To decline the request, click the “Unable to do the review” icon and send the email message that is generated.
  5. If you accepted the request, click the file name to read the submitted article (as well as any supplementary files). You may not be able to see the file until you have accepted the review request. Once the acceptance email is sent, the link to the file will appear.
  6. Click the “Review Form” icon to record your review. You need to enter text, check boxes, make selections of all required fields. This is the information that you will be required to provide
    1. Editorial suggestion: Publish as is / Publish after minor revisions / Major revisions (I will review again) / Major revisions (I suggest ... as a new reviewer) / Unsound
    2. Is the paper technically correct? Yes/No/Probably
    3. Is there enough details for an independent researcher to reproduce the work? Yes/No/Probably
    4. Does the manuscript contain new information/ideas with respect to to the known literature? Yes/No/Probably
    5. Is the manuscript length and general layout appropriate? Yes/No/Probably
    6. Is the manuscript well written? Yes/No/Probably
    7. Is the supplementary material submited for publication suitable and worth publishing? Yes/No/Probably
    8. Report: It is useful if you start with a description of the main contribution done by the authors and your criticisms if any. Use two numbered lists: one for major criticisms and one for minor corrections suggested. This report will be forwarded to the authors for their consideration.
    9. Comments intended solely to the Editor.
  7. Save your review. You may return to this form and add additional information at anytime until your review is complete.
  8. If you wish to upload files for the author and/or the editor to consult, use the “Upload files” tool.
  9. Select a recommendation and submit the review to complete the process. You must enter a review or upload a file before selecting a recommendation.

Open Review

If you have been asked from one of our Editors to do an open review your identity will be made known to the author, and eventually to the community if the author requires publication. If publication proceeds, you will be invited to write a final report that will be published alongside the manuscript and the author's reply if appropriate. You will have the opportunity to proofread your report before publication. Please follow the instructions below to prepare and submit your report. If you find the paper is not technically correct or lacks originality the Editor will decline the submission and you can ask her/him not to disclose your identity. Under the open review system, the editors encourage that your contribution as a consultant for Papers in Physics be published as a Commentary (it is optional to you), which you can cite as any other publication by DOI.

If the paper is accepted for publication, you will be invited to publish your report. If you accept, you will have to rewrite you report in the format of the journal (please, refer to the document Publishing reports). Prior to publication, your report in its final form will be forwarded to the authors, who will have the opportunity to publish a reply if the Editor feels this is appropriate.
